Dental implants
A titanium or zirconia post placed in the jaw to replace a missing tooth root, topped with a crown.
Key points
- An implant replaces a tooth root with a post in the jawbone. A crown goes on top once the bone has healed.
- Most cases need two trips, the second one 3 to 6 months after the first.
- Bone grafts or sinus lifts add time, so get a 3D scan reviewed before you book flights.
- Keep the implant brand and batch details. Your dentist at home needs them for repairs.

An implant replaces the root of a missing tooth. The surgeon places a small screw in the jawbone, the bone grows around it, and a crown is fixed on top once it has healed.
How the visits work
Most implant cases need two trips:
- Placement. Examination, a 3D scan (CBCT), then surgery to place the implant. Plan for about a week in the city so the clinic can check healing and remove stitches.
- The crown. After the bone has healed, usually 3 to 6 months later, you come back for the abutment and the final crown. This takes another 5 to 7 days.
Some clinics offer "immediate loading", where a temporary crown goes on the same day. It doesn't suit everyone, and it still needs a second visit for the permanent crown. If you need a bone graft or sinus lift first, the timeline gets longer.
Questions to ask the clinic
- Which implant brand do you use, and can I get the implant's batch details for my records? Your dentist at home will need them if anything has to be repaired.
- Is the quote for the implant alone, or does it include the abutment, the crown and the scan?
- Who places the implant, and how many implant cases has that dentist done?
- What does the warranty cover, and what happens if the implant fails after I've gone home?
Before you book
Send the clinic a recent panoramic X-ray or CBCT scan if you have one. Tell them about any medication you take, especially blood thinners or bisphosphonates, and whether you smoke. Ask your surgeon how soon you can fly after placement.
Frequently asked questions
Can I get an implant and a permanent crown in one trip?
Usually not. The bone needs months to heal around the implant before the permanent crown goes on. Some clinics fit a temporary crown on the day of surgery, but you still come back for the final one.
Will my dentist at home be able to look after a Vietnamese implant?
Often yes, if the clinic uses a widely sold implant system and gives you its brand, model and batch details. Ask your dentist at home which systems they can service before you choose a clinic.
How long after surgery can I fly?
It depends on the surgery, especially if you had a sinus lift. Ask the surgeon before you book your return flight.
