When to visit Vietnam for dental treatment, season by season in the north, the central coast and the south, and how weather affects outings, recovery days and flights.
Plan my tripKey points
- Treatment works the same in any month. The season changes what you can do between appointments and how likely flights are to be delayed.
- March to May is the best time to visit Vietnam for weather across the whole country, according to Vietnam's official tourism site.
- Hanoi is at its best in autumn (September to November). Ho Chi Minh City is driest from December to April. Nha Trang is dry from January to August.
- Da Nang and Huế get heavy rain and storms in autumn, with seasonal flooding in October and November, so leave spare days if you travel then.
- Around Tết, the Lunar New Year in late January or February, many businesses close and transport is fully booked. Check your clinic's holiday dates.
The best time to visit Vietnam for weather across the whole country is March to May, according to Vietnam's official tourism site. For a dental trip, though, the best time depends on where your clinic is. Hanoi is most comfortable in autumn, Ho Chi Minh City is driest from December to April, Nha Trang is dry from January to August, and Da Nang and Huế are best avoided in late autumn, when storms are most likely.
Dental treatment itself works the same in any month. The season changes three things: how pleasant your free days are, how easy it is to rest after surgery, and how likely a storm is to delay your flight home.
Vietnam's three climates
Vietnam is long and narrow, so the north, the central coast and the south have different seasons. Vietnam's tourism site describes the country as having both tropical and temperate zones.
| Region | Cities | Drier, more settled months | Wetter months | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| North | Hanoi, Hai Phong | Autumn, roughly September to November | Summer, roughly June to September | Cold, damp winters and hot, humid summers |
| Central coast | Da Nang, Huế | Spring and summer, roughly March to August | Autumn into winter, roughly September to December | Storms and seasonal flooding in October and November |
| South-central coast | Nha Trang | January to August | September to December | Rough seas for boat trips in the wet months |
| South | Ho Chi Minh City, Cần Thơ | December to April | May to November | Short, heavy afternoon downpours |
Sources don't always agree on the exact months. The UK government gives June to September as the rainy season in the north and south, and October to December in central Vietnam. Vietnam's tourism site gives May to November for Ho Chi Minh City and September to December for Nha Trang. Treat the months as a guide, not a guarantee.
Month by month
| Month | Hanoi and the north | Da Nang and Huế | Nha Trang | Ho Chi Minh City |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| January | Cool and drizzly | Cool, some rain | Dry season starts | Dry |
| February | Cool and drizzly, Tết often falls now | Drying out | Dry | Dry |
| March | Short, pleasant spring | Dry, good for outings | Dry | Dry and hot |
| April | Pleasant | Dry and sunny | Dry | Dry and hot |
| May | Getting hot | Warm and dry | Dry | Wet season begins |
| June | Hot, humid, rainy | Hot and dry | Dry | Afternoon showers |
| July | Hot, humid, rainy | Hot, good beach weather | Dry | Afternoon showers |
| August | Hot, humid, rainy | Hot, mostly dry | Dry | Afternoon showers |
| September | Autumn begins, cooler and clearer | Rain and storms start | Rainy season starts | Afternoon showers |
| October | Cool, clear, a top month | Rainy, flood risk | Rainy | Afternoon showers |
| November | Cool, clear | Rainy, flood risk | Rainy | Wet season ending |
| December | Cool, getting cold | Rainy | Rainy | Dry season begins |
Typhoons can hit the eastern coast too. The UK government says the season usually runs from May to November, though storms can happen at other times, and can bring flooding and transport disruption.
How the weather affects a dental trip
Days between appointments
Free days are easier in dry, mild weather. In Hanoi, that means autumn and spring: Vietnam's tourism site describes the city's springs and autumns as short and pleasant. In Ho Chi Minh City, rain in the wet season tends to come as an afternoon downpour, so plan outings for the morning. On the central coast in autumn, long spells of rain can wash out a planned day trip, so keep the plan flexible.
Rest days after surgery
After an extraction or implant surgery, you'll spend a day or two resting near your hotel. Heat and humidity make that harder. Vietnam's tourism site says Hanoi's summer humidity can be high, and the UK government warns that heat and humidity can be severe, especially in the rainy season. Choose a hotel with good air conditioning close to your clinic, and drink plenty of water.
Swimming, boat trips and diving
Beach cities are a draw, but swimming, snorkelling and long boat trips should wait until your dentist says the wound has healed. In Nha Trang, the dry months from January to August are best for island trips. Plan beach days for the end of your stay, after your final check.
Flights home
Storms can delay flights, especially on the central coast in autumn. If you travel to Da Nang, Huế or Nha Trang between September and December, leave a spare day or two between your last appointment and your flight. Our guide to flying after dental treatment explains how long to wait after each procedure.
Tết: plan around the Lunar New Year
Tết, the Lunar New Year, is Vietnam's biggest holiday. It follows the lunar calendar, so the date moves each year, usually falling in late January or February. Vietnam's tourism site says celebrations begin three days before the new year and last a few days after, and that businesses and restaurants usually close for at least the first few days.
For a dental trip, this matters in two ways:
- Clinics may close. Ask your clinic for its holiday dates before you book.
- Transport and hotels fill up. The tourism site advises avoiding travel around the country at Tết if you can, and booking well ahead if you can't.
Best time to go, by city
| City | Best months for a dental trip | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Hanoi | September to November, or a spring trip | Vietnam's tourism site lists September to November as the best time, when autumn is cool and dry |
| Ho Chi Minh City | December to April | The dry season, with sunny, less humid days |
| Da Nang | March to May, or September to early October | Vietnam's tourism site suggests these months for warm, sunny days |
| Huế | March to August | The drier months, before the autumn rains |
| Nha Trang | January to August | Dry, sunny weather for the beach and island trips |
If you can't travel in those months, you can still go. Treatment doesn't depend on the weather, and a longer trip gives you more chance of good days. Choose your clinic first, then fit the dates around the treatment.
Planning checklist
- Choose the clinic and treatment dates first, then the flights.
- Check the season for your clinic's city, not the whole country.
- On the central coast between September and December, add a spare day before your flight home.
- Ask your clinic whether it closes for Tết or other public holidays.
- Pick a hotel near the clinic with good air conditioning.
- Save beach days, boat trips and long excursions for after your final check.

Frequently asked questions
When is the best time to visit Vietnam?
Vietnam's official tourism site says March to May offers the best weather across the whole country. Each region has its own pattern, so the best month depends on where your clinic is.
Does the season affect dental treatment?
No. Clinics work indoors all year. The season matters for outings between appointments, for rest days after surgery and for flights, which storms can delay.
When is the rainy season in Vietnam?
It differs by region. The UK government says the rainy season runs from June to September in the north and south, and from October to December in central Vietnam. Vietnam's tourism site gives May to November for Ho Chi Minh City and September to December for Nha Trang.
When is typhoon season in Vietnam?
The UK government says tropical cyclones affect Vietnam's eastern coast, usually between May and November, though they can happen at other times. They can bring heavy rain, flooding and transport disruption.
What is the best month for a dental trip to Hanoi?
Vietnam's tourism site lists September to November as the best time for Hanoi, when autumn is cool and dry. Winters are cool and drizzly, and summers are hot and humid.
What is the best month for a dental trip to Da Nang?
Vietnam's tourism site suggests March to May and September to October for warm, sunny days. Heavy rain and storms are most likely later in the year.
Is it a good idea to travel at Tết?
It's harder. Vietnam's tourism site says businesses and restaurants usually close for at least the first few days of Tết, and transport and hotels book up. Ask your clinic whether it closes, and book everything well ahead.
Is the rainy season a bad time for a dental trip?
Not necessarily. In Ho Chi Minh City the wet season usually means short afternoon downpours. On the central coast, autumn storms are more disruptive, so build in spare days before your flight home.
