Choice of clinics

Ho Chi Minh City has the most clinics that treat international patients, so it's the easiest place to compare several written plans for the same X-rays. That helps most for complex work, such as several implants or a full set of crowns or veneers.

Hanoi also has many clinics that treat international patients, and for most treatments you won't be short of options. Whichever city you choose, check the same things: the clinic's licence, who will treat you, how instruments are sterilised, and what the warranty covers. Our guide to choosing a clinic lists the questions, and you can compare verified clinics in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.

Weather

The two cities have very different climates, which can decide the question if your dates are fixed.

Hanoi has four seasons. Vietnam's tourism site describes cool, drizzly winters, hot and humid summers, and short, pleasant springs and autumns. It lists September to November as the best time, when autumn is cool and dry. Winter lows can drop to around 10 degrees, and many buildings have no central heating, so pack warm layers for a winter trip.

Ho Chi Minh City is hot all year, with temperatures normally around 30 degrees, according to the tourism site. The dry season, December to April, brings sunny, less humid days. From May to November, expect short afternoon showers that can flood streets for a while and slow traffic.

The UK government gives June to September as the rainy season in both the north and the south. Our guide to the best time to visit Vietnam has a month-by-month table.

Getting there and getting around

Tan Son Nhat, Vietnam's busiest airport, is about 7 km from central Ho Chi Minh City, so you can be at your hotel quickly after landing. Noi Bai is roughly 35 to 45 km from central Hanoi, reached by airport bus, taxi or ride-hailing car. If you have an early appointment the day after you land, the shorter airport ride in Ho Chi Minh City helps.

In both cities, ride-hailing apps such as Grab are the simplest way to reach appointments. Hanoi's old centre is easy to explore on foot, while Ho Chi Minh City is more spread out. Getting around Vietnam explains the apps and transport options.

The feel of each city

Vietnam's tourism site calls Hanoi a capital city where ancient traditions coexist with energetic urban life. The Old Quarter is a maze of 36 historic streets, each traditionally linked to a craft or trade, and Hoàn Kiếm Lake has a peaceful lakeside promenade. The Temple of Literature, built in 1070, was Vietnam's first national university.

The tourism site describes Ho Chi Minh City as a freewheeling, cosmopolitan metropolis. Đồng Khởi street has the Notre Dame Cathedral, the Central Post Office and the Saigon Opera House, and Chợ Lớn, the Chinese quarter, has Bình Tây Market and Thiên Hậu Pagoda. Street food such as bánh mì and cơm tấm is everywhere, although both are best left until you can chew comfortably after surgery.

Between appointments and day trips

On days between appointments, stay close to your hotel. In Hanoi, a walk around Hoàn Kiếm Lake or through the Old Quarter fits easily into a free morning. In Ho Chi Minh City, the area around the old post office and the cathedral is compact and easy to see in a few hours.

Day trips take longer. From Hanoi, Ha Long Bay and Ninh Bình each mean several hours on the road. From Ho Chi Minh City, the Củ Chi tunnels and Mekong Delta boat tours take most of a day. Book them before surgery or after your final check, never the day after an extraction or implant.

Who each city suits

Choose Hanoi if you:

  • prefer a slower pace and a walkable old centre
  • are travelling in autumn or spring
  • want a day trip to Ha Long Bay or Ninh Bình
  • have found a Hanoi clinic you trust for your treatment

Choose Ho Chi Minh City if you:

  • want the widest choice of clinics to compare
  • want the shortest airport transfer and the most international flights
  • are travelling between December and April
  • like a busy city with plenty of shopping and street life

If you're still unsure, send the same X-rays to clinics in both cities and compare their written plans. Then let the clinic decide the city. When you're ready, the trip planner shows a sample day-by-day trip for your treatment in either city, and planning your visits explains how long each treatment takes.

Frequently asked questions

Is Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City better for dental treatment?

Neither is better for the treatment itself. Ho Chi Minh City has the widest choice of clinics, so it suits complex work where you want to compare several plans. Hanoi suits patients who prefer a quieter, cooler trip, especially in autumn. Choose the clinic first, then the city.

Which city has better weather?

It depends on the month. Vietnam's tourism site lists September to November as the best time for Hanoi and December to April for Ho Chi Minh City. Hanoi has cool, drizzly winters and hot, humid summers. Ho Chi Minh City is hot all year, with short afternoon showers from May to November.

Which airport is closer to the city centre?

Tan Son Nhat in Ho Chi Minh City is about 7 km from the centre, according to Vietnam's tourism site, and it's the country's busiest airport. Noi Bai is roughly 35 to 45 km from central Hanoi, depending on the route.

Can I visit both cities on one trip?

Yes, and domestic flights link them many times a day. Do the travelling before treatment starts or after your final check, not in the days after surgery.

Is Saigon the same as Ho Chi Minh City?

Yes. The city was renamed Ho Chi Minh City in 1976, and many people still call it Saigon, especially the central districts.

Which city is better for a longer implant trip?

Either works. Ho Chi Minh City makes it easier to compare several implant clinics, and its airport has the most international flights. If your second trip falls in Hanoi's winter, pack for cool, damp weather.

Which is better for a family trip?

Both have plenty to see near the centre. Hanoi's Old Quarter and lakes are easy to explore on foot, and Ho Chi Minh City has more shopping and a busier street life. Our guide to family and group dental trips covers planning for more than one patient.
