Ha Long Bay on a dental trip: day trip or cruise, and when to go

How to fit Ha Long Bay into a dental trip to Hanoi: what the bay is, getting there, day trip or overnight cruise, boat safety, the best months, and why to keep it away from surgery days.

Plan my trip

Key points

  • Ha Long Bay is a UNESCO World Heritage Site of limestone islands in Quảng Ninh, about two to two and a half hours by road from Hanoi according to Vietnam's tourism board.
  • You can see it on a long day trip from Hanoi or on a cruise of one or two nights.
  • Plan it before treatment starts or after your final check. Keep it away from the days just after an extraction or implant surgery.
  • Swimming, kayaking and rock climbing can wait until your dentist says the wound has healed.
  • The UK government advises checking boat safety standards carefully before an overnight trip on the bay.

Ha Long Bay is a bay of limestone islands and caves in Quảng Ninh, north-east Vietnam, and the best-known day trip from Hanoi. Vietnam's tourism board puts it at about two to two and a half hours by road from the capital. On a dental trip, visit Ha Long Bay before treatment starts or after your final check, either as a long day trip or on a cruise of one or two nights. Keep it away from the days just after an extraction or implant surgery, and leave swimming and kayaking until your dentist says you've healed.

What Ha Long Bay is

The bay covers about 1,553 square kilometres, according to Wikipedia, and is filled with limestone islands and islets. Counts differ between sources: Vietnam's tourism board and Wikipedia give figures from about 1,600 islands to nearly 2,000 islets. Many have caves with old rock formations, and some, such as Sửng Sốt, Thiên Cung and Đầu Gỗ, carry local legends.

UNESCO first listed Ha Long Bay as a World Heritage Site in 1994, and again in 2000. In September 2023 the listing was extended to a joint site, Ha Long Bay and the Cat Ba Archipelago, which Vietnam's tourism board describes as the country's first World Heritage Site to cross provincial borders. Bai Tu Long Bay lies to the north-east, and Lan Ha Bay and Cat Ba Island to the south.

When to fit it around treatment

A trip to the bay means a long day on the road and on a boat, far from your clinic. That's fine before treatment starts, on days when the dental lab is making your crowns or veneers, or once your dentist has done the final check. It's a poor fit for the days just after surgery.

Stage of your tripHa Long Bay?
Before your first appointmentGood. A day trip or a cruise both work.
Lab days, while crowns or veneers are being madeGood for a day trip if you feel well and have no appointment the next morning.
The day of an extraction or implant surgeryNo. Rest near your hotel.
The first two or three days after surgeryBetter avoided. MedlinePlus advises avoiding heavy activity for the first couple of days.
After your final checkGood. A cruise of one or two nights fits well here.

Getting there from Hanoi

Vietnam's tourism board says the bay is about two hours from Hanoi on one page and about two and a half hours on another, so allow for the longer figure. Cruises leave from Tuan Chau and Bai Chay ports. For a day trip, the tourism board suggests leaving Hanoi very early. Most visitors book a tour that includes the road transfer, the boat and meals.

Plan for a long day. If you have an appointment the next morning, ask your clinic whether a late return will be a problem, and keep the trip for a day with nothing booked afterwards if you can.

Day trip or overnight cruise

Vietnam's tourism board lists three common choices: a full day of cruising, two days and one night, or three days and two nights. Overnight boats include a cabin, meals and activities, and the bay at sunset and early morning is the highlight of many trips.

On a treatment trip, a day trip is the simpler choice, because it needs only one free day and you sleep near your clinic. A cruise fits better at the start of your stay or after your last appointment, when you have nothing to come back for.

What to do on the bay

The tourism board lists these activities. The table shows which ones need you to be fully healed.

ActivityWhat it isOK after recent dental work?
Cruising and the sun deckWatching the islands pass, sunset and morning viewsYes, if you feel well
CavesWalking through caves, some large and some tightYes, at a gentle pace
Floating village toursA boat trip around a fishing villageYes
KayakingPaddling to lagoons and fishing boats, often just before sunsetWait until you've healed
SwimmingOff the boat or at a beach stopWait until your dentist says the wound has closed
Rock climbing and deep water soloingClimbing routes on the cliffs, popular at Butterfly IslandWait until you've healed

A 2023 review in the British Dental Journal advises against diving and other activities with pressure changes after dental treatment. Ordinary swimming isn't diving, but after an extraction or implant surgery, ask your dentist before you get in the water.

Boat safety

The UK government's travel advice has a specific warning about the bay. It says to consider safety standards carefully before taking an overnight boat trip on Halong Bay, because overcrowding and poor safety standards have led to accidents in past years, and some boats have sunk quickly. It also advises you to:

  • check the boat's safety record and registration with your tour company
  • ask about the crew's certification
  • get a full safety briefing, and make sure you have a life jacket

Booking through an established operator and reading recent reviews helps. Vietnam's tourism board says you can book through an agent, directly on a boat's website, or through booking sites.

The best time to visit

Vietnam's tourism board recommends March and April and September to November for clear, calm days on the bay. Summer is hot and humid with a chance of storms, and winter is cooler and drier, often with a light mist. The UK government says tropical cyclones usually affect Vietnam's eastern coast from May to November, and trips can be cancelled in bad weather.

If your treatment dates fall in the storm season, keep the bay for early in your stay, so a cancelled trip can move to another day. Our guide to the best time to visit Vietnam compares the seasons for each region.

Eating on a cruise after treatment

Cruise meals are included in most packages and are often seafood. If you've had recent surgery, tell the operator when you book that you need soft food, such as soup, steamed fish or rice porridge, and skip shellfish that needs a lot of chewing. Our guide to soft food after dental surgery lists what to eat and what to avoid.

Ha Long Bay checklist

  • Ask your dentist which days are free and when you're fit for a long day out
  • Choose a day trip for lab days, and a cruise for before treatment or after your final check
  • Check the boat's safety record, registration and life jackets
  • Book soft meals if you've had surgery
  • Leave swimming, kayaking and climbing until you've healed
  • Keep a spare day in the storm season, roughly May to November
  • Take your clinic's phone number and your medicines with you

Frequently asked questions

How far is Ha Long Bay from Hanoi?

Vietnam's tourism board puts it at about two to two and a half hours by road. Cruises leave from Tuan Chau and Bai Chay ports.

Can I do Ha Long Bay as a day trip from Hanoi?

Yes. Vietnam's tourism board suggests leaving Hanoi very early for a day trip. It's a long day with several hours on the road, so choose a day with no appointment and no recent surgery.

Is a day trip or an overnight cruise better on a dental trip?

A day trip keeps you closer to your clinic and needs only one free day. An overnight cruise lets you see the bay at sunset and sunrise, but takes you away for longer, so it fits best before treatment starts or after your final check.

Can I go to Ha Long Bay after a tooth extraction or implant surgery?

Not in the first days. MedlinePlus advises avoiding heavy physical activity for the first couple of days after an extraction, and a day trip is long and tiring. Ask your dentist when you're fit to travel, and wait for their go-ahead before swimming or kayaking.

Can I swim or kayak in Ha Long Bay after dental work?

After a check-up or whitening, usually yes. After extractions or implant surgery, wait until your dentist says the wound has closed.

When is the best time to visit Ha Long Bay?

Vietnam's tourism board recommends March and April and September to November, when days are clear and calm. Summer is hot with a chance of storms, and the UK government says tropical cyclones usually affect the coast from May to November.

Are Ha Long Bay cruises safe?

The UK government says overcrowding and poor safety standards have caused accidents in past years. It advises checking the boat's safety record and registration, getting a full safety briefing, and having a life jacket.

What can I eat on a Ha Long Bay cruise after dental treatment?

Cruises usually include meals. Tell the crew when you book that you need soft food, and ask for soups, steamed fish or rice porridge if you've had recent surgery.
