Things to do in Da Nang between dental appointments

The best things to do in Da Nang on a dental trip, sorted by how active you can be: gentle outings on treatment days, day trips to Hoi An and Huế on free days, and the beach once you've healed.

Plan my trip

Key points

  • The best things to do in Da Nang between dental appointments are short and close to your hotel, such as the beach promenade, Han Market and the Marble Mountains.
  • Save day trips to Hoi An, Huế, the Hai Van Pass or the Son Tra Peninsula for days with no treatment, and keep them away from the days just after surgery.
  • Swimming, diving and boat trips can wait until your dentist says the wound has healed.
  • The UK government says central Vietnam's rainy season runs from October to December, with seasonal flooding in October and November, so keep spare days in those months.

The best things to do in Da Nang on a dental trip depend on where you are in your treatment. On appointment days, stay close to your hotel: walk the beach promenade at My Khe, eat at Han Market, or spend a quiet hour at the Marble Mountains. On free days, take a day trip to Hoi An's old town, the Huế monuments or the Son Tra Peninsula. Leave swimming, diving and boat trips until your dentist says you've healed.

Da Nang is a good city for this kind of trip. The beach runs along the edge of the city, the sights are spread out but easy to reach by car, and two UNESCO World Heritage Sites, Hoi An and Huế, are within day-trip range. This guide sorts the main sights by how active you can be, so you can fit them around your appointments.

Your clinic's aftercare instructions come first. Ask what you can do on each day of your treatment, especially after an extraction or implant surgery.

Easy outings for appointment days

On days when you have an appointment, or the day after a long session in the chair, keep outings short and close to your hotel. Take a car rather than a motorbike, and be back in time to rest.

The beach promenade

My Khe beach sweeps south from the Son Tra Peninsula, and much of it is still used by locals as a playground, gym and place to work, according to Vietnam's tourism board. A walk along the promenade in the early morning or evening is one of the easiest things to do in Da Nang while you're having treatment. Sitting on the sand is fine. Swimming can wait.

Han Market and the food stalls

Vietnam's tourism board describes Da Nang's street food as famous across the country, from mì Quảng noodles to grilled bánh tráng rolls, and suggests starting at Han Market. After dental work, choose soft dishes and let soups cool. Mì Quảng usually comes with a crunchy rice cracker, so ask for it without in the first days. Our guide to soft food after dental surgery lists dishes to order and what to avoid.

The Marble Mountains

The Marble Mountains are five limestone and marble hills with caves, pagodas and wide viewpoints. You can climb the stairs or take a lift, then follow shaded paths through the sanctuaries. On a treatment day, use the lift and keep the visit short. MedlinePlus advises avoiding heavy physical activity for the first couple of days after an extraction, and steep stairs in the heat count.

Bigger outings for free days

When the clinic doesn't need you for a day, such as the lab days between preparing teeth and fitting crowns or veneers, you have time for longer trips. Keep them away from the days just after surgery. Planning your visits shows which days of a typical treatment are free, and the trip planner builds a sample day-by-day trip for Da Nang.

Son Tra Peninsula

A winding coastal road leads through forest, quiet coves and temples on the Son Tra Peninsula. Look for the Lady Buddha statue and, if you're lucky, the rare red-shanked douc langurs. The drive is gentle, but it takes a few hours, so it suits a free day better than an appointment day.

Hoi An Ancient Town

Hoi An was a major Asian trading hub from roughly the 1400s to the 1800s and was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999. Walking its streets is "like moving through a living museum", in the words of Vietnam's tourism board. Things to do there include:

  • The old town walk. An Old Town Ticket covers entry to five heritage buildings.
  • The Japanese Covered Bridge. Vietnam's tourism board says the Japanese community built it to link their neighbourhood to the Chinese one. Sources give different dates for it, from the late 16th to the 18th century. It appears on the 20,000 đồng note.
  • Lanterns on the river. On the 14th day of each lunar month the town dims its lights and lanterns are set adrift for good luck.
  • A boat trip. Sunset sampan cruises and sunrise fish-market tours are on offer.
  • A tailor. Tailors make clothes to order, with the fabric included. Order early so they have time to finish.

A boat trip on the river is calm water, but it's still a boat. Leave it for a day when you feel well.

The Hai Van Pass and Huế

The Hai Van Pass is one of Vietnam's great scenic drives, climbing above the sea between Da Nang and Huế. You can stop at the old fortress for the view. Go by car rather than motorbike: the UK government says travelling by motorbike in Vietnam is much riskier than in the UK, and advises against hiring one unless you're an experienced rider.

Huế was the capital of the Nguyen Dynasty, which ruled from 1802 to 1945, and its monuments are UNESCO-listed. Things to do include walking the palaces and pavilions of the Huế Citadel, visiting the tombs of the emperors Tự Đức, Minh Mạng and Khải Định, and eating at Đông Ba Market. Huế is a long day out from Da Nang, so plan it before treatment starts or after your final check. Our Huế city guide has more.

When you've healed

Beach swimming, snorkelling and boat trips are among the best things to do in Da Nang, but they're for the end of your stay.

  • Swimming. Ask your dentist. After extractions or implant surgery, most advise waiting until the wound has closed.
  • Diving. A 2023 review in the British Dental Journal advises avoiding diving and other activities that expose you to pressure changes after dental treatment. Ask your dentist when it's safe.
  • Boat and adventure trips. The UK government warns that tour operators' safety standards may not match those at home. Check the operator's safety record before you book.

Planning around the weather

Treatment isn't affected by the weather, but outings are. Vietnam's tourism board describes March to May and September to October as ideal for the beach and the Hai Van Pass. The UK government says the rainy season in central Vietnam runs from October to December, with seasonal flooding in October and November. If you travel then, keep a spare day before your flight home. The Da Nang city guide covers the seasons, the airport and where clinics are.

After implant surgery, the plan looks different: rest the day after, keep the next few days gentle, and save the day trips for before surgery or after the healing check.

Before you book

  • Check the verified clinics in Da Nang and ask each for a written plan.
  • Fix the treatment dates first, then plan outings around them.
  • Book a hotel near your clinic, so appointment days need only a short ride.
  • Save your clinic's phone number, and know that 115 is the number for an ambulance in Vietnam.
  • Read flying after dental treatment before you book the trip home.

If you're choosing between cities, our Central Vietnam guide compares Da Nang, Huế and Nha Trang, and things to do in Nha Trang covers the beach city further south.
