Key points

  • The best area to stay in Hanoi is the one closest to your clinic. Choose the clinic first, then book a hotel within a short walk or ride.
  • The Old Quarter and Hoàn Kiếm have the most hotels and food, but they're busy and noisy into the night.
  • West Lake (Tây Hồ) and Trúc Bạch are quieter and suit longer stays, such as an implant week.
  • Ba Đình is calmer than the Old Quarter and close to many of the city's landmarks and offices.
  • Noi Bai airport is roughly 35 to 45 km from the centre, depending on the route. Bus 86 runs to the Old Quarter, and taxis and ride-hailing cars wait at both terminals.

The best place to stay in Hanoi for a dental trip is the area closest to your clinic. For most visitors that means the Old Quarter and Hoàn Kiếm, which have the most hotels and food but also the most noise, or quieter Ba Đình and West Lake (Tây Hồ), which suit longer stays and recovery after surgery. Choose your clinic first, check its address, then book somewhere within a short walk or ride.

Where to stay in Hanoi matters more on a treatment trip than on a holiday. You'll go back and forth to the clinic several times, you may need to rest after surgery, and you'll want soft food close by. This guide compares the main areas, explains how to choose, and covers getting in from Noi Bai airport.

Clinics that treat international patients are spread across the central districts, including Hoàn Kiếm, Ba Đình, Đống Đa, Cầu Giấy and Tây Hồ. The Hanoi city guide has more on each, and the clinic list for Hanoi shows which clinics have passed our checks.

How to choose where to stay for dental treatment

Distance to your clinic. This is the main factor. A typical veneer trip has four or more appointments, and an implant trip includes surgery followed by a rest day. A hotel a short walk away beats a long taxi ride through rush-hour traffic, especially the morning after surgery.

Quiet for recovery. After an extraction or implant you'll want to sleep and rest. Ask for a room away from the street, or choose a calmer area.

Soft food nearby. In the first days after surgery you'll eat cháo, soups and soft tofu. Check there are cafés or street stalls close by, or that you can order delivery. Our guide to eating after dental work lists what to order.

A fridge or kitchen. Useful for yoghurt, smoothies, ice packs and medicines. Apartments are easier for long stays.

Help at night. A 24-hour reception means someone can call a car or help you if you feel unwell after treatment.

The Old Quarter

The Old Quarter is a maze of 36 historic streets, each once known for a trade, just north of Hoàn Kiếm Lake. It has the widest choice of places to stay and something to eat on every corner. Vietnam's tourism board describes it as "a hectic place", with shops on the pavements and motorbikes in narrow streets. On weekends Hàng Đào street becomes a night market.

It's a good base for a short treatment, such as whitening or crowns, if your clinic is in Hoàn Kiếm. After surgery, pick a room at the back of the building or a side alley.

Around Hoàn Kiếm Lake

The lake is the centre of the city. The tourism board's Old Quarter guide says it is calmest early in the morning and late in the afternoon, and the streets around it close to vehicles on weekends. The Opera House is close by. A flat walk round the lake is one of the easiest outings on a treatment day.

Ba Đình

Ba Đình is Vietnam's political centre, home to the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum, Ba Đình Square, the One Pillar Pagoda, the Presidential Palace and the Imperial Citadel of Thang Long. Its many colonial-era, French-style villas and government buildings once earned it the name "French Quarter", which travel guides still use. Evenings are calmer than in the Old Quarter. It suits patients whose clinic is in Ba Đình or neighbouring Đống Đa.

Trúc Bạch and West Lake (Tây Hồ)

West Lake is Hanoi's largest lake, north-west of the centre, with a shoreline of about 17 km. Thanh Niên road separates it from the smaller Trúc Bạch Lake, and Trấn Quốc Pagoda sits on a small island near the road. Most of the lake is in Tây Hồ district, where many expatriates and long-stay visitors live, so serviced apartments are common.

The area is quieter than the centre, with cafés along the water. It's a good choice for an implant week or a long veneer trip, when you'll spend more time resting. If your clinic is in the centre, allow for the drive, and take a car rather than a motorbike after surgery.

Getting from Noi Bai airport to the Old Quarter

Noi Bai International Airport is roughly 35 to 45 km from downtown Hanoi, depending on the route, and linked to the city by an expressway. Terminal 2 handles international flights and Terminal 1 domestic ones, with a free shuttle bus between them.

OptionHow it works
Bus 86Runs from both terminals to the Old Quarter and Hanoi railway station
TaxiWaiting outside both terminals in the arrivals area
Ride-hailing carBook in an app such as Grab
Hotel pick-upArrange with your hotel before you fly

The UK government advises using pre-arranged transport or official apps such as Grab or Xanh SM, and warns that unplanned "free" bus transfers to hotels may be scams. After a long flight, and especially if your first appointment is the next morning, a booked car is the simplest choice. See getting around Vietnam for more.

Before you book

  • Check your clinic's exact address and the appointment dates.
  • Search for places to stay within a short walk or ride of the clinic.
  • Ask for a quiet room away from the street.
  • Check for a fridge, or book an apartment for long stays.
  • Ask whether reception is open 24 hours and can call a car.
  • Keep the clinic's phone number and the hotel's address in Vietnamese on your phone.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best area to stay in Hanoi?

For a dental trip, the area nearest your clinic. For a first visit with short appointments, the Old Quarter or the streets around Hoàn Kiếm Lake put you close to the sights. For a longer or surgical stay, West Lake or Ba Đình are quieter.

Is the Old Quarter a good place to stay after dental surgery?

It's convenient, with soft food on every street, but it's loud. Vietnam's tourism board calls it "a hectic place", with motorbikes in narrow streets. Ask for a room at the back of the building, away from the street.

Where do long-stay visitors live in Hanoi?

Many stay around West Lake in Tây Hồ district, where the shoreline is home to both wealthy Vietnamese residents and expatriates. Serviced apartments there suit longer treatment trips.

How far is Noi Bai airport from the Old Quarter?

Noi Bai is north-east of downtown Hanoi, roughly 35 to 45 km away depending on the route, and linked by an expressway. Allow plenty of time at rush hour.

How do I get from Hanoi airport to the Old Quarter?

Take bus 86, which runs from both terminals to the Old Quarter and Hanoi railway station, or a taxi from the arrivals area. Ride-hailing apps such as Grab also work. If you arrive after a long flight before treatment, a car is the simplest choice.

Should I book a hotel or an apartment for dental treatment?

For a short stay, such as crowns or whitening, a hotel near the clinic is easiest. For implants or a long veneer trip, an apartment with a kitchen and fridge makes soft food and cold packs easier.

What should I ask a hotel before a dental trip?

Ask whether rooms face the street, whether there's a fridge or kitchen, whether the hotel can book a car to your clinic, and how late the reception is staffed. If you need help at night after surgery, a 24-hour reception matters.

Is it better to stay near the clinic or near the sights?

Near the clinic. Hanoi's traffic is slow at rush hour, and after surgery a short trip back to bed matters more than being next to the sights. You can take a car to the sights on your free days.
