The best area to stay in Ho Chi Minh City for a dental trip is the one nearest your clinic. For most visitors that means central Saigon, the area of the former District 1, which has the main sights, a wide range of hotels and many clinics that treat foreign patients. The former District 3 is next door and a little calmer. Bình Thạnh suits people who want food and nightlife, and Thảo Điền suits longer stays and families.
Where you stay matters more on a treatment trip than on a holiday. You may visit the clinic four or five times in a week, sometimes numb, tired or straight after surgery. A short, easy journey back to a quiet room makes those days much easier. This guide compares the main areas and explains how to choose.
First, a note on addresses
On 1 July 2025 Vietnam removed its district level of local government. Ho Chi Minh City, which also absorbed Bình Dương and Bà Rịa-Vũng Tàu provinces, is now divided into wards and communes, and the old numbered districts no longer exist officially.
Many hotels, guides and clinics still use the old names, so you'll see a mix. This guide uses the old district names, because that's what most listings show, with the new ward names alongside. Before you book, put your clinic's address and the hotel's address into a map app and check the route between them.
The best areas to stay, compared
| Area | New wards (from July 2025) | What it's like | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Central Saigon (former District 1) | Sài Gòn, Bến Thành, Tân Định, Cầu Ông Lãnh | The centre, with French-era buildings, Bến Thành Market and Nguyễn Huệ walking street | Short trips, first visits, sightseeing between appointments |
| Former District 3 | Bàn Cờ, Xuân Hòa, Nhiêu Lộc | Next to the centre, long known as a place to live for its food, culture and easy access | A calmer base close to central clinics |
| Bình Thạnh | Bình Thạnh, Gia Định, Bình Lợi Trung, Thạnh Mỹ Tây, Bình Quới | Indie and foreigner-friendly, with local and international food, bars and nightlife | Younger travellers, clinics in the area |
| Thảo Điền (former District 2) | An Khánh | Wider pavements, Western food and international schools | Long stays, families, implant trips |
| Chợ Lớn (former District 5) | Several new wards | Vietnam's historic Chinatown, home to many Vietnamese-Chinese residents | Visitors with family nearby, or clinics in the area |
Central Saigon (former District 1)
This is where most first-time visitors stay. The Notre-Dame Cathedral, the Central Post Office, Bến Thành Market and Nguyễn Huệ walking street are all here, so you can see the main sights in short walks between appointments. Đa Kao, now part of Sài Gòn ward, is known for its French colonial buildings and historic streets, and Tân Định has the pink Tân Định Church.
Many clinics that treat international patients are in this area, along with the widest range of hotels. The downside is noise and traffic on the main roads.
Bùi Viện. This walking street in the centre is known as a hub for Western backpackers and stays busy late into the night. It's fun for a night out, but on a treatment trip you'll sleep better a few streets away.
Former District 3
The former District 3 sits next to the centre and was long the go-to place to live for its easy access to the centre, food and culture. The War Remnants Museum is here, in what is now Xuân Hòa ward. It's a good choice if your clinic is in District 1 or District 3 and you'd like quieter evenings without being far from anything.
Bình Thạnh
Vietcetera describes Bình Thạnh's indie, rough-around-the-edges and foreigner-friendly charm, with local and international food, trendy bars and nightlife. It suits younger travellers or anyone whose clinic is in Bình Thạnh. Check the room is away from any bar street if you need rest.
Thảo Điền (now An Khánh ward)
Thảo Điền is across the Saigon River from the centre, in the area that used to be District 2 and is now An Khánh ward. It has wider pavements, many Western restaurants and several international schools, which makes it popular with families and long-stay visitors.
For a two-week implant trip, a serviced apartment here can be more comfortable than a hotel, especially if you want a kitchen for soft-food days. Before you choose it, check how long the trip to your clinic takes, as river crossings can slow you down at busy times.
Choosing where to stay for your treatment
| Your trip | Where to look first | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Check-up, whitening or a few fillings | Central Saigon | Short visits, lots to do nearby |
| Crowns or veneers, about a week | The area your clinic is in | Several visits, some while numb |
| Implant surgery | Within a short car ride of the clinic | You'll need a car back after surgery and a quiet room for rest days |
| Long stay with family | Thảo Điền or District 3 | Calmer, with space and food options for everyone |
| Very early flight home | Near your clinic, or closer to the airport for the last night | Shorter final journey |
A few more things to check when you book:
- Lift and stairs. After surgery you won't want to climb several floors.
- Noise. Ask for a room away from the street.
- Food nearby. Soft dishes such as cháo, phở and hủ tiếu are easy to find in most areas. Our soft food guide lists what to order. Food delivery apps also help on rest days.
- A flexible booking. Treatment plans sometimes change once the dentist has examined you, so a booking you can extend is useful.
Getting from Tan Son Nhat airport
Vietnam's official tourism site says Tan Son Nhat, the country's busiest airport, is about 7 km from the centre, with taxis, ride-hailing and city buses. Travel time depends on traffic, so allow extra time at rush hour and in heavy rain.
The UK government advises using pre-arranged transport or official apps such as Grab and Xanh SM, and warns about unlicensed taxi drivers. Many hotels and some clinics can arrange a car to meet you. Our guide to getting around Vietnam explains how to book safely.
A new international airport is being built at Long Thành, about 40 km east of the city, and is planned to take over international flights. Check which airport your ticket uses before you arrange transfers.
Safety
The UK government warns that bag snatchers operate in crowded areas and places visited by tourists, sometimes from motorbikes. Carry your phone and bag on the side away from the road, and leave passports and spare cash in the hotel safe.
