Plan my trip

Key points

  • The best place to stay in Huế is close to your clinic. Huế is compact, so most areas are a short ride apart.
  • The north bank of the Perfume River holds the walled citadel, the Imperial City and Đông Ba Market.
  • The south bank has French-era buildings such as Quốc Học High School. Most tourist hotels, bars and restaurants cluster on Phạm Ngũ Lao, Chu Văn An and Võ Thị Sáu streets.
  • Phu Bai International Airport is about 15 km south of the city.
  • In the rainy season, from about September to December, heavy rain can flood low-lying streets, so ask how your hotel copes.

The best place to stay in Huế for a dental trip is close to your clinic. Huế is a compact city split by the Perfume River. The north bank holds the walled citadel, the Imperial City and Đông Ba Market. The south bank has French-era buildings, and most tourist hotels, bars and restaurants cluster on a few central streets. Choose your clinic first, then book on the same side of the river, within a short walk or ride.

This guide compares the two banks for a treatment trip and covers getting in from Phu Bai airport. For clinics and the weather, see our Huế city guide.

How to choose where to stay

Distance to the clinic. On a dental trip you'll go back and forth to the clinic several times. After an injection or surgery, a short trip back to bed matters more than a view. Ask the clinic which streets are closest and check the route on a map.

Which side of the river. The Perfume River passes through the centre of Huế. If your clinic is on the north bank, stay on the north bank, and the same for the south. It saves crossing a bridge for every short appointment.

Quiet for recovery. Huế is calmer than Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City, but the streets with the most bars can be lively at night. Ask for a room at the back of the building.

Soft food nearby. Huế food is often very spicy. Stay somewhere with cafés and simple restaurants close by, so you can find cháo and soft dishes without chilli. Our guide to soft food after dental surgery has ideas.

A fridge. Useful for yoghurt, soft fruit and cold packs after surgery.

Help at night. If you're having surgery, a reception that's staffed late is reassuring.

The north bank: the citadel and Đông Ba Market

The Imperial City sits inside a large walled area on the north side of the Perfume River, with ramparts of about 2 by 2 km. Đông Ba Market is on the north bank too, near the south-east corner of the citadel, and sells fresh produce, fish, clothing and handicrafts. Thiên Mụ Pagoda is further along the north bank, about 5 km from the citadel.

Staying on this side puts the main sights within reach on your free days. Check how close your hotel is to your clinic, because the citadel covers a large area.

The hotel streets and the south bank

Most of Huế's tourist hotels, bars and restaurants cluster on Phạm Ngũ Lao, Chu Văn An and Võ Thị Sáu streets. French-style buildings, including the crimson Quốc Học High School, line the south bank of the river.

This side suits a short treatment, such as crowns or whitening, when you want food and taxis on the doorstep. For a longer or surgical stay, look for a hotel on a side street, away from the bars.

Getting in from Phu Bai airport

Phu Bai International Airport is in Phú Bài, south-east of the city, about 15 km away according to Vietnam's tourism board. Taxis and ride-hailing cars are the simplest way into town, and the Reunification Express railway and the road over the Hải Vân Pass link Huế with Da Nang.

If you land the day before treatment starts, go straight to the hotel and rest. Our guide to getting around Vietnam explains how to use ride-hailing apps.

Planning around the weather

Huế's rainy season runs from about September to December, and about 70% of the year's rain falls then. Rain often comes in short heavy bursts that can flood low-lying streets. If you travel in autumn:

  • Ask your hotel whether its street floods.
  • Choose somewhere close to the clinic, so you aren't relying on long rides in heavy rain.
  • Leave spare days before your flight home.

Vietnam's tourism board names February to April as the best time to visit. Our guide to the best time to visit Vietnam compares the regions.

Booking checklist

  • The clinic's address, and which side of the river it's on
  • A hotel within a short walk or ride of the clinic
  • A room away from the street
  • A fridge, and somewhere nearby for soft food
  • Late reception if you're having surgery
  • In autumn, a hotel on a street that doesn't flood
  • Flexible dates in case the clinic needs an extra visit

Frequently asked questions

What is the best area to stay in Huế?

For a dental trip, the area nearest your clinic. Most tourist hotels, bars and restaurants are around Phạm Ngũ Lao, Chu Văn An and Võ Thị Sáu streets. If your clinic is near the citadel, the north bank puts you close to it and to Đông Ba Market.

Should I stay on the north or south bank of the Perfume River?

Stay on the same side as your clinic if you can, so short appointments don't mean crossing the river each time. Both banks are close to the centre, and taxis and ride-hailing cars cover both.

How far is Phu Bai airport from Huế?

About 15 km, according to Vietnam's tourism board. The airport is in Phú Bài, south-east of the city.

Is Huế quiet enough to recover after dental surgery?

Huế is calmer than Vietnam's big cities, which suits recovery. The streets with the most bars can still be lively at night, so ask for a room away from the street.

Should I stay in Huế or Da Nang for treatment?

Stay in the city where your clinic is. Huế and Da Nang are linked by road over the Hải Vân Pass and by train, but it's a long round trip for a short appointment.

What should I ask a hotel before a dental trip to Huế?

Ask whether rooms face the street, whether there's a fridge, whether staff can book a car to your clinic, how late reception is staffed, and in autumn, whether the street floods in heavy rain.

Should I book a hotel or an apartment in Huế?

For a short treatment such as crowns or whitening, a hotel near the clinic is easiest. For a longer stay, a room with a fridge or a small kitchen helps with soft food and cold packs.
