Plan my trip

Key points

  • The best things to do in Huế are close together, so short outings fit easily between dental appointments.
  • On treatment days, keep to gentle outings near your hotel, such as a walk by the Perfume River or a café.
  • Save the Imperial City and Thiên Mụ Pagoda for days when the clinic doesn't need you, and the royal tombs for after any surgery has settled.
  • Huế's rainy season runs from about September to December, with heavy bursts of rain that can flood streets, so leave spare days in autumn.
  • Huế food is often spicy. Ask for no chilli (không cay) in the first days after treatment.

The best things to do in Huế on a dental trip are the Imperial City, Thiên Mụ Pagoda, a walk or a short boat trip on the Perfume River, Đông Ba Market and the royal tombs. Huế is compact and calm, so most of these fit around appointments. Keep gentle outings for treatment days, save the bigger sights for days when the clinic doesn't need you, and leave the tombs and longer trips until any surgery has settled.

Huế was the capital of the Nguyễn dynasty, and Vietnam's tourism board describes palaces, pavilions and theatres that survive from its 143-year reign. Since 2025 it has been a centrally governed city. This guide sorts the main sights by how much energy they take. For clinics, flights and the weather, see our Huế city guide.

On treatment days: gentle outings

On days with an appointment, especially after injections, extractions or long sessions, stay close to your hotel and keep outings short.

The Perfume River. The river passes through the centre of Huế, and Vietnam's tourism board says it sets the city's relaxed pace. A short walk along the bank is an easy way to get some air between visits.

Đông Ba Market. The market is on the north bank of the Perfume River, near the south-east corner of the citadel. It sells fresh produce, fish, clothing and handicrafts, and it's busiest in the early morning. A short look round is fine, but it's crowded, so go when you feel well.

A café. Sit somewhere cool and drink from a glass. After an extraction, skip the straw, and let hot drinks cool down. Our guide to soft food after dental surgery explains why.

On free days: the Imperial City and Thiên Mụ Pagoda

When the clinic doesn't need you, for example while a lab makes your crowns or veneers, you have time for Huế's main sights.

The Imperial City. Also called Đại Nội, it's a royal enclosure inside the walled city, on the north bank of the Perfume River. The ramparts measure about 2 by 2 km, and inside is the Purple Forbidden City, once open only to the imperial family. The main southern gate is Ngọ Môn, and the flag tower, Kỳ Đài, stands at the front of the citadel. Much of it was damaged in fighting in 1947 and 1968, and it became part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Complex of Huế Monuments, in 1993. It's a lot of walking in the heat, so take water and rest in the shade.

Thiên Mụ Pagoda. Thiên Mụ is the largest pagoda in Huế and the official symbol of the city. It stands on Hà Khê hill on the north bank of the river, about 5 km from the citadel. Its seven-storey Phước Duyên tower was built in 1844, and the pagoda itself dates from 1601. Take a car there and back if you've had treatment that week.

Quiet places. Vietnam's tourism board suggests Từ Hiếu Monastery, where Thích Nhất Hạnh lived as a novice monk, and the crimson buildings of Quốc Học High School on the south bank.

Once you've healed: tombs, boats and bikes

These outings take longer, so plan them for before treatment starts or after your final check.

The royal tombs. The tombs of Nguyễn emperors lie along the Perfume River outside the city. Vietnam's tourism board lists the tombs of Tự Đức, Minh Mạng and Khải Định. Tự Đức's tomb took three years to build, from 1864 to 1867, and has a lake with pavilions where the emperor moored his boats. Expect a few hours out, with steps and walking.

A Perfume River boat trip. A slow boat trip is calm, but you're on the water for a while. After surgery, wait until your dentist is happy, and don't go if you're still bleeding or feel unwell.

Cycling in the countryside. The tourism board suggests cycling through the rice paddies to Thanh Toàn Bridge, which has a tiled roof. Leave this until you've finished treatment.

The weather and when to go

Vietnam's tourism board names February to April as the best time to visit Huế. The city has hot, dry summers and a wet season from about September to December, when heavy rain and typhoons can hit, mostly from September to November. Rain often falls in short heavy bursts that can flood low-lying streets. Treatment isn't affected, but outings and flights can be. If you travel in autumn, leave spare days. Our guide to the best time to visit Vietnam compares the regions.

Eating in Huế after treatment

Huế food is at the heart of central Vietnamese cooking, served in small, carefully presented portions and often very spicy. In the first days after treatment:

  • Ask for không cay (not spicy) when you order.
  • Try bánh bèo, small steamed rice cakes, once you can chew a little.
  • Leave bún bò Huế, the city's famous noodle soup, until your mouth has healed, as it's usually spicy.
  • Let soups cool before you eat them.

Frequently asked questions

What are the top things to do in Huế?

The Imperial City and its Purple Forbidden City, Thiên Mụ Pagoda on the Perfume River, the royal tombs of emperors such as Tự Đức, Minh Mạng and Khải Định, Đông Ba Market, and Huế's food. Vietnam's tourism board also suggests cycling through the rice paddies and visiting Từ Hiếu Monastery.

Can I visit the Imperial City on the day of a dental appointment?

It's a large site, with outer ramparts of about 2 by 2 km, so it's a lot of walking. A short visit before an easy appointment is fine, but after surgery or a long session, save it for a free day.

How far is Thiên Mụ Pagoda from the centre?

It sits on Hà Khê hill on the north bank of the Perfume River, about 5 km from the citadel. A taxi or ride-hailing car is the easiest way to get there.

Can I take a boat trip on the Perfume River after dental treatment?

A short, calm boat trip is a gentle outing. After extractions or implant surgery, wait until your dentist says you can go out for longer, and avoid boat trips if you feel unwell or are bleeding.

When is the best time to visit Huế?

Vietnam's tourism board suggests February to April. The rainy season runs from about September to December, with heavy rain and typhoons possible from September to November.

What should I eat in Huế after dental treatment?

Choose soft dishes and ask for them without chilli. Bánh bèo, small steamed rice cakes, are soft once you can chew a little. Bún bò Huế is a famous local soup but is usually spicy, so leave it until your mouth has healed.

Are the royal tombs worth visiting on a dental trip?

Yes, on a free day. The tombs lie along the Perfume River outside the centre, so a visit takes a few hours. Plan it for before treatment starts or after your final check, not the day after surgery.
