Where to stay in Cần Thơ for a dental trip

Where to stay in Cần Thơ on a dental trip, comparing the Ninh Kiều riverside centre, Bình Thủy, Cái Răng and the river islets by distance to your clinic and recovery, plus getting in from the airport and Ho Chi Minh City.

Plan my trip

Key points

  • The best place to stay in Cần Thơ is close to your clinic. For most visitors that means the centre, around Ninh Kiều wharf, where many hotels line the riverside.
  • Bình Thủy and Cái Răng are quieter areas a short ride from the centre. They suit you if your clinic is there, or if you want to be near the old house or the floating market.
  • Homestays on the river islets are peaceful, but each trip to the clinic means a boat or ferry crossing, so keep them for after treatment.
  • Cần Thơ is about three hours by road from Ho Chi Minh City, and Can Tho International Airport has flights from Hanoi and Da Nang.
  • The rainy season runs from May to November, so in those months stay close to the clinic and book morning appointments.

How to choose where to stay

Distance to the clinic. On a dental trip you'll go back and forth to the clinic several times. After an injection or surgery, a short ride back to bed matters more than a river view. Ask the clinic which streets are closest and check the route on a map.

Avoid boat commutes. Cần Thơ is a city of rivers, and some of its nicest places to stay are across the water. A boat or ferry crossing is fine on a free day. It's a chore before an early appointment or straight after surgery.

Quiet for recovery. The riverside around Ninh Kiều is busy in the evening, with a night market and boats setting off on dinner cruises. Ask for a room at the back or on a side street if you're having surgery.

Soft food nearby. Stay near cafés and simple restaurants so you can find cháo, noodle soups and ripe fruit without a long trip. Our guide to soft food after dental surgery has ideas.

A fridge. Useful for yoghurt, soft fruit and anything your dentist tells you to keep cold.

Help at night. If you're having surgery, a reception that's staffed late is reassuring.

Ninh Kiều: the riverside centre

Ninh Kiều wharf sits on Hai Bà Trưng Street, on the right bank of the Hậu River, and Vietnam's tourism board calls it a symbol of the city.Trusted SourceVietnam National Authority of Tourism (vietnam.travel)The official tourism website of Vietnam, run by the Viet Nam National Authority of Tourism.View source The old wharf is now a riverside park of 7,000 square metres.Trusted SourceVietnam National Authority of Tourism (vietnam.travel)The official tourism website of Vietnam, run by the Viet Nam National Authority of Tourism.View source Next to it, a pedestrian bridge about 200 metres long crosses the river and is lit up at night.Trusted SourceVietnam National Authority of Tourism (vietnam.travel)The official tourism website of Vietnam, run by the Viet Nam National Authority of Tourism.View source Cần Thơ Night Market, about 1 km west of the Hậu River, sells street food and local dishes.Trusted SourceVietnam National Authority of Tourism (vietnam.travel)The official tourism website of Vietnam, run by the Viet Nam National Authority of Tourism.View source Cần Thơ Museum is on Hòa Bình Avenue in the same part of town.Trusted SourceVietnam National Authority of Tourism (vietnam.travel)The official tourism website of Vietnam, run by the Viet Nam National Authority of Tourism.View source

The tourism board's advice on where to stay is to pick somewhere central, so the wharf, Ông Pagoda, the Bình Thủy ancient house and the Cái Răng floating market are all easy to reach.Trusted SourceVietnam National Authority of Tourism (vietnam.travel)The official tourism website of Vietnam, run by the Viet Nam National Authority of Tourism.View source That suits a dental trip as well. You'll have food, pharmacies and taxis close by, and boats to the floating market leave from the wharf, so a free morning on the river needs no extra travel.

The catch is noise. The riverside is the liveliest part of the city at night, so for a surgical stay, look for a hotel a street or two back from the water.

Bình Thủy: quieter, near the old house

Bình Thủy is home to the Bình Thủy ancient house on Bùi Hữu Nghĩa Street, built in 1870 by the Dương family.Trusted SourceVietnam National Authority of Tourism (vietnam.travel)The official tourism website of Vietnam, run by the Viet Nam National Authority of Tourism.View source From the Cô Bắc ferry station in Bình Thủy, a boat to Cồn Sơn islet takes about 5 to 10 minutes.Trusted SourceVietnam National Authority of Tourism (vietnam.travel)The official tourism website of Vietnam, run by the Viet Nam National Authority of Tourism.View source

This area is calmer than the riverside centre. It makes sense if your clinic is on this side of the city, or if you'd like a quieter base and don't mind a ride into the centre for food and evening walks. Check the travel time to your clinic before you book.

Cái Răng: by the floating market

Staying out here only helps if your clinic is nearby, or if seeing the market at dawn is a priority. Most visitors stay in the centre and take a boat from the wharf instead. Keep the market for a day without surgery. MedlinePlus advises avoiding too much physical activity for the first couple of days after an extraction,Trusted SourceMedlinePlus, US National Library of MedicineHealth information from the US National Library of Medicine, part of the National Institutes of Health.View source and an early start on a small boat is more effort than it sounds. The islets and homestays outside the city

Vietnam's tourism board says the islets are a short ferry ride from downtown, with shaded lanes, noodle-making villages and fruit farms,Trusted SourceVietnam National Authority of Tourism (vietnam.travel)The official tourism website of Vietnam, run by the Viet Nam National Authority of Tourism.View source and that you'll find homestays in the lanes outside the city where hosts welcome you like family.Trusted SourceVietnam National Authority of Tourism (vietnam.travel)The official tourism website of Vietnam, run by the Viet Nam National Authority of Tourism.View source Cồn Sơn, in the middle of the Hậu River, covers about 70 hectares of orchards and gardens.Trusted SourceVietnam National Authority of Tourism (vietnam.travel)The official tourism website of Vietnam, run by the Viet Nam National Authority of Tourism.View source

For a dental trip, an islet homestay works best at the end. During treatment, each clinic visit means a boat crossing and then a ride across town, which is a lot after an extraction or implant. Once you're healed, a few nights among the orchards are a good way to rest before you fly home.

Staying with family in the delta

Many patients who choose Cần Thơ are visiting relatives in the Mekong Delta. If your family lives outside the city, work out the travel time to the clinic before you book appointments. On surgery days, consider a night or two in a hotel in the centre, so the ride back is short and you're close by for a check-up. Arrange a car home rather than riding a motorbike.

  • Ask your hotel whether its street floods.

  • Book morning appointments where you can.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best area to stay in Cần Thơ?

For a dental trip, the area nearest your clinic. For most visitors that's the centre around Ninh Kiều wharf, where shops, restaurants and taxis are close by.

Is Ninh Kiều wharf a good base for a dental trip?

Yes, for most patients. It's the centre of the city, Vietnam's tourism board suggests staying in the centre for easy access to the main sights,Trusted SourceVietnam National Authority of Tourism (vietnam.travel)The official tourism website of Vietnam, run by the Viet Nam National Authority of Tourism.View source and boats to the Cái Răng floating market leave from the wharf. Ask for a room away from the riverside road if you want quiet evenings after surgery.

Can I stay in a homestay on the islets during treatment?

You can, but every visit to the clinic means a boat or ferry crossing and then a ride across town. That's tiring after an extraction or implant. Stay in the centre for the treatment days, and move to a homestay once you've healed.

I'm staying with family outside Cần Thơ. Can I still have treatment in the city?

Yes, but count the travel time on surgery days. For an extraction or implant, consider a night or two in a hotel near the clinic, so the ride home is short and you're close by for the check-up.

What should I ask a hotel before a dental trip to Cần Thơ?

Ask whether rooms face the street or the river road, whether there's a fridge, whether staff can book a car to your clinic, how late reception is staffed, and in the wet season, whether the street floods.
